Washing, Drying and Shrinkage:
How do I care for my natural fabric clothing?
How do I care for my natural fabric clothing? - hide
It's so simple. Just machine wash in cold water with like colors, then tumble dry on low heat. Never use bleach. The beauty of hemp, cotton and bamboo clothing is that it possesses “give” yet retains its shape and last through three times as many washes as a 100% cotton jersey would. Just don't leave it in the dryer, remove it as soon as it is dry and the wrinkles will fall out. All natural fabrics can wrinkle. Use a warm iron, not hot, if necessary.
The Bamboo items may take longer to dry than cotton clothing. We like to dry them on a regular cycle, then let them air-dry the rest of the way. Also the bamboo fibers will tighten up in the dryer especially the socks. Just put them on anyway, they stretch right back out.

Natural Fiber:
Why are natural fabrics such a hot topic these days?
Why are natural fabrics such a hot topic these days? - hide
Yes, everyday there is some "green" article in the news. We think this is great!
Not only for our company but for the Earth. Natural fibers have excellent properties like keeping you cool in the heat by their natural breathing capabilities and warm in the cold with the density of the fibers, and they are biodegradable.
Organically grown fibers are free of chemical fertilizer and pesticides which has a huge impact on soil, water, the workers who have to handle it, honeybees, and so many more aspects of life. It doesn't make sense NOT to use them.
What makes natural clothing more expensive than regular clothes?
What makes natural clothing more expensive than regular clothes? - hide
There are two factors: the cost of the materials and the cost of the labor.
Natural fabrics grown without pesticides have a lower total yield since more pests are able to snack on the fibers. Limited supply also increases the cost of the fabrics and trims we use.
The second factor is the cost of labor. We manufacture 90% of our garments in Los Angeles. We know the cutters, sewers, and dyers personally. We can see the working conditions ourselves. We support people making a living wage and appreciate that cutting, sewing, and dying is skilled work.
Dyes and Washes:

The dyes Geo Mio uses are the safer more colorfast low-impact fiber reactive dyes available, and our environmentally friendly enzyme wash makes our planet-safe clothing ultra soft and luxurious. Be sure to wash the garment before using to remove excess dye and never use bleach.
Bamboo:
Can you really make a fabric from Bamboo?
Can you really make a fabric from Bamboo? - hide
Of course and it is one of the most luxuriously soft fabrics you will ever feel on your skin. People who touch the fabric for the first time are amazed to learn it is made from bamboo. And the anti-bacterial and excellent wicking properties are inherent in the plant itself, not added chemically later like so many other treatments textile manufacturers are capable of doing.
Is bamboo Panda safe?
Is bamboo Panda safe? - hide
Yes, currently the only country processing bamboo into fiber is China. Although the Giant Panda is one of the most endangered animals on the planet, China has been able to increase the population by 40% since the 1980s. There are 33 nature reserves in China with a combined area of 1.6 million hectares which is just a bit smaller than the land area of the state of Hawaii. The current global population of Giant Pandas is estimated to be about 1700. The bamboo for fiber comes from plantations.
Why did Geo Mio choose to make Bamboo clothing?
Why did Geo Mio choose to make Bamboo clothing? - hide
Bamboo is actually a grass and is the fastest growing woody plant on this planet. It grows one third faster than the fastest growing tree making it one of the most sustainable textile fibers. A critical element in the balance of oxygen / carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, Bamboo is the fastest growing canopy for the re-greening of degraded areas and generates more oxygen than an equivalent stand of trees. It lowers light intensity and protects against ultraviolet rays and is an atmospheric and soil purifier. Plus it's naturally anti-bacterial. So with all those benefits, why wouldn't we use it? Hey, did we mention it‘s incredibly soft?
Where does the Bamboo fabric come from?
Where does the Bamboo fabric come from? - hide
Currently the only suppliers of bamboo fiber for yarn and fabric are in China. We are working with U.S. textile companies to get more locally made fabrics. Hopefully, we will be able to say our fabrics are “Made in the USA” eventually.
UV Protection:
I heard that bamboo and hemp fabric could protect us from UV rays. Is this true?
I heard that bamboo and hemp fabric could protect us from UV rays. Is this true? - hide
Yes, both hemp and bamboo fibers have natural UV protection. Although testing has yet to provide just how much protection it provides, it can be said that there is more protection with 100% natural clothing than blends. The protection is natural rather than chemically added. That is why it is harder to measure its effects.
Organic Cotton:
What is the difference between Cotton and Organic Cotton?
What is the difference between Cotton and Organic Cotton? - hide
Organic cotton, unlike conventionally grown cotton, is better for our environment. It protects the health of people and the planet by reducing the overall exposure to toxic chemicals from synthetic pesticides that can end up in the ground, air, water and food supply. Just to give you a reference point, it is estimated that ¾ of a pound of chemical fertilizers and pesticides are used to grow the regular cotton used in one pair of conventional cotton jeans.
Why do some of Geo Mio's labels say cotton instead of Organic Cotton?
Why do some of Geo Mio's labels say cotton instead of Organic Cotton? - hide
We had some of our labels printed before we received the Certificates that allowed us to say we use Organic Cotton. We thought it was better to confirm that our fabric had Organic Cotton rather than assume, even though it meant our labels don't fully reflect our commitment to the environment. Eventually all of Geo Mio's labels will say Organic Cotton.
Hemp:
What is hemp exactly?
What is hemp exactly? - hide
"Hemp is one of earth's most beneficial agricultural crops, providing all the basic necessities for human life: food, clothing, shelter, and medicine. The plant itself is easy to grow in temperate climates, and requires good soil, fertilizer and water, but no pesticides nor herbicides. A hemp crop is usually harvested in 120 days after reaching a height of 10-15 feet. At that point one can make it into whatever suits their needs." Quote from Mari Kane, HIA Board Member.
Why does Hemp make a good fabric?
Why does Hemp make a good fabric? - hide
Hemp fiber is superior in strength and durability, and it is super resistant to rot. Hemp fiber contains a low amount of the organic glue that binds plant cells, which allows for environmentally friendly bleaching without the use of chlorine. In composite form, hemp is twice as strong as wood. It is sustainable, biodegradable, and resists staining. The plant is processed by the same method that makes flax into linen.
